Blood/heart Flashcards
What are red blood cells?
Contains haemogoblins
Binds to oxygen to transport
No nucleus and small
What are white blood cells?
Protect body against infection
can change shapes
What are platelets?
Dead cells to trigger blood clotting
Describe the arteries
Thick wall made from muscle
Transports blood from heart to organs
Describe the veins
Thin walls with valves to prevent back-flow
Transports blood from organs to heart
Describe the capillaries
Narrow and thin-walled
Allow substances needed by cells out
Allow substances produced by cells in
Describe the 4 chambers of the heart
Vena Cava- carries blood from body to heart
Aorta- carries blood from heart to body
Pulmonary artery- carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs
Pulmonary vein- carries oxygenated blood from lungs to hearts
What is coronary heart disease?
Layers of fatty material build up inside the coronary arteries and narrow them
How to treat coronary heart disease
Stents: keep the coronary arteries open
Statins: reduce blood cholesterol levels and slows down rate of build up of fatty acids
Describe Plant features (epidermis, palisade mespohyll, spongy mesophyll)
Epidermis- cover outer surface for protection
Palisade mesophyll- site of photosynthesis
Spongy mesophyll- air spaces allow gas to diffuse
Xylem vessels- transport water and minerals from root to leaves
Phloem vessels- transports food materials
