Blood Roles Flashcards

1
Q

what are the roles of blood?

A
  • oxygen is carried to tissues for aerobic respiration & toxic carbon dioxide is carried away from tissues
  • nutrients and harmful chemicals are taken from the gut to the liver
  • contains clotting factors and platelets to stop haemorrhage
  • heat distribution away from hot tissues to colder ones
  • temperature regulation
  • hormone transport
  • contains infection-fighting leukocytes
  • enzyme transport (more than 1300)
  • flushes dirt and pathogens out of a wound
  • helps with water storage and regulation
  • helps with excretion of water via kidneys, lungs, skin etc
  • pH
  • transfusion of blood to yourself and others

Q

what is the mnemonic for the roles of blood?

A

CONCH THIEF WEPT (Carbon dioxide transport from tissues to lungs, Oxygen transport from lungs to tissues, Nutrients and harmful substances moved from gut to liver, Clotting factors to stop bleeding, Heat distribution to the whole body, Temperature regulation, Hormone transport, Infection control, Enzyme distribution, Flushing of dirt and pathogens from wounds, Water storage and regulation, Excretion of waste and poisons, pH control, Transfuse blood to others)
