Blood Supply Flashcards
Describe the location of the internal carotid artery
Enters the cranium through the carotid canal of the temporal bone.
Enters into the base of the brain
What does the external carotid artery supply?
the meninges, the skull and the extra-cranial tissues
What are the branches of the internal carotid artery?
Opthalmic artery
Anterior choroidal artery
Anterior cerebral artery (ACA)
Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA)
Location and supply of the basilar artery
Runs up the middle of the brainstem
Supplies the brainstem and cerebellum with blood
What arteries form the circle of willis (CoW)
2 internal carotid arteries
Anterior cerebral artery
Anterior communicating arteries
Posterior cerebral arteries
Where is the Circle of Willis found?
In the optic chiasma and the pituitary gland
Supply and location of the ACA
Travels between the hemispheres and corpus callosum - in the longitudinal fissure
Supplies the medial surface of the frontal and parietal lobes
Location of MCA
Travels along the lateral fissure to the lateral surface of the cortex
- divides into frontal, parietal and temporal branches
Supply and location of the PCA
Branches of the basiliar artery.
Curves along the inferior brain surface
Supplies the medial and part of the inferior temporal lobe and the inferior and medial occipital lobes
