Body Structure Flashcards
Levels of organization
Cell Tissue organ system organism
Cell
Smallest structural and functional unit of life
Utilize food reproduce and eliminate waste
Cytology
The study of the body at the cellular level
Tissues
Similar cells that with my specialize or specialized functions
Epithelial
Covers the surface of the organs, lining the cavities, and the outer layer of the skin (epidermis)
Connective tissue
Support other body tissues, like cartilage, bone and even blood
Muscle tissue
Responsible for movement
Nervous tissue
Transmit electric impulses to relay information throughout the body
Organs
Composed of two or more tissue types EXAMPLE: the stomach is composed of muscles and connective tissue you with a epithelial tissue line the outside of the stomach
Systems
A body system is composed of various numbers of organs and structures with similar function
Example: Gastrointestinal system: esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon work together to digest food absorb nutrients and expel waste
Organism
Highest level of the organization
A complex living entity capable of independent existence
How many body systems are there and what do they do
They work together to sustain life and there are several body systems
Midsagittal (median)
Runs through the center of the body divides into right and left
Coronal (frontal)
Guys into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections
Transverse (horizontal)
Divides into top and bottom sections
