Bonds Flashcards
Ionic Bonds
the transfer of electrons between molecules of two different electronegativities
(metal with non metal)
Covalent bonds
the sharing of electrons between two molecules with similar electronegativities
(two nonmetals)
Ionic Properties
Properties: high melting point (MP), high boiling point (BP), brittle, hard.
Forces: ionic interactions (lattice structure)
Ex: NaCl MgO
Molecular Properties
Properties: low MP, does NOT conduct electricity
Forces: intermolecular forces
Ex: H2O, Cl2, CH4
Network Covalent Properties
Properties: high MP, high BP, hard, does NOT conduct electricity
Forces: network of covalent bonds
Ex: C (diamond, graphite), SiO2 (quartz)
Metallic Properties
Properties: variable hardness, and melting points, it DOES conduct electricity, conducts heat, is lustrous (shiny), malleable, ductile
Forces: metallic bonding
Ex: Fe, Mg
