tubular shaft of bone (compact)
Epiphysis
expanded area at the end of bone (spongy)
Metaphysis
narrow junction that connects diaphysis & epiphysis
example of flat bones
found in skull, sternum, ribs and scapula
what are flat bones
sandwhich of spongy bone between 2 layers of compact bone (no medullary cavity)
what are sutural bones
small, irregular bones between the flat bones of the skull
what are irregular bones
complex shapes such as spinal vertebrae and pelvic bones
what are short bones
small & thick bones; ankle and wrist bones (talus, carpals and tarsals)
What are sesamoid bones
small flat bones that develop inside tendons
near joints of knees, hands and feet (ex. patella)
