What happens in Genesis?
This book sets up the story of the Israelites before they go into slavery in Egypt. God creates everything. Adam and Eve sin. Adam and Eve have two sons Cain and Abel. Cain kills able. Seth is born in replace of Abel. Noah, a descendant of Seth build the ark and God floods the earth. Abraham, a descendant of Noah, makes a covenant with God and is promised the land of Canaan to his descendants. Abraham’s son Isaac has twins Esaú and Jacob. Jacob takes Esau’s birth rights and blessings. Jacob (Israel) has twelve sons, one of those being Joseph who is sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt. Joseph does well in Egypt and a famine brings his family to live in Egypt where their descendants will later be enslaved there when a new king takes over.
