brain Flashcards
What are the parts of the midbrain?
Tectum and Tegmentum
What are the parts of the hindbrain?
Pons, Cerebellum, Reticular Formation, Medulla
What are the parts of the forebrain?
Cerebral cortex, Corpus callosum, Basal ganglia, Thalamus, Hippocampus, Amygdala, Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland
What is the role of the tectum
The tectum orients an organism in the environment. The tectum receives stimulus input from the eyes, ears, and skin and moves the organism in a coordinated way towards the stimulus.
What are the parts of the subcortical structures
Corpus callosum, Basal ganglia, Thalamus, Hippocampus, Amygdala, Hypothalamus, Pituitary gland
What are the lobes of the cerebral cortex
occipital lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, frontal lobe
What is the role of the tegmentum
The tegmentum is involved in movement and arousal; it also helps to orient an organism towards sensory stimuli.
What is the role of the pons
a structure that relays information from the cerebellum to the rest of the brain.
What is the role of the medulla
The medulla is an extension of the spinal cord into the skull that coordinates heart rate, circulation, and respiration.
What is the role of the reticular formation
regulates sleep, wakefulness, and levels of arousal.
What is the role of the cerebellum
a large structure of the hindbrain that controls fine motor skills.
What is the role of the Thalamus
The thalamus relays and filters information from the senses and transmits the information to the cerebral cortex.
What is the role of the Hypothalamus
regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, and sexual behaviour.
What is the role of the limbic system
involved in motivation, emotion, learning, and memory
What parts are involved in the limbic system
the hypothalamus, the hippocampus, and the amygdala,
