Breathing Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the function of each part of the respiratory system

A

Nasal cavities: Contain cilia that warms, moistens and filters air
Trachea:Airway supported by rings of cartilage
Bronchi:Large air passages to the lungs

Q

What happens to the different structures of inspiration at rest?

A

Ribs: Move up and out
Diaphragm: Contracts and flattens

Q

What happens during inspiration?

A
  1. External intercostals contract
  2. Ribs move up and out
  3. Diaphragm contracts and flattens
  4. Pressure in the lungs decreases

Q

What changes happen to inspiration during exercise than at rest?

A
  1. Intercostals, pectorals and sternocleidomastoid contracts
  2. Ribs=further
  3. Diaphragm=more
  4. Pressure decreases further
  5. Air rushes in quicker

Q

Describe the five stages of expiration

A
  1. Intercostals contract
  2. Ribs move down and in
  3. Diaphragm relaxes and moves up
  4. Pressure in the lungs decreases

Q

Describe the differences in expiration at rest versus during exercise

A
  1. Internal intercostals contract
  2. Ribs move at a faster rate
  3. Abdominal contract and pulls the diaphragm up
  4. Pressure decreases further
  5. More air rushes out quicker
