Breathing and Respiration Flashcards
breathing
the movement of air in and out of your body
external respiration
the exchange of oxygen and co2 within the lungs
internal respiration
the exchange of oxygen and co2 with blood and muscle tissues
cellular respiration
oxidation of glucose for energy
what happens in between the chest cavity and atmosphere gases?
the lung pressure changes so gases move from high pressure to low pressure called diffusion.
inspire (breath in)
the pressure inside the lung is lower than the atmospheric pressure
expire (exhale)
the pressure within the lung is higher than the atmospheric pressure.
what is created by changing the volume of the lungs?
the change in lung pressure
what happens to the diaphragm when you inhale?
it contracts and flattens, the lungs expand
what happens to the diaphragm when you exhale?
it relaxes and becomes a dome shape
what helps the diaphragm function properly?
the movement of the ribs- intercostal muscle
what happens to the intercostal muscles when you inhale?
it contracts moves upwards and outward (increase the volume)
what happens to the intercostal muscles when you exhale?
it relaxes and pulls inwards and downwards (decreasing lung volume)
