Q

How to treat Timber Attack?

A
  • Fix the moisture issue
  • Open up
  • Cut back timber at least 500mm beyond the last sign of fungal growth
  • Wire brush walls and affected area and treat
  • Replace timbers with new treated timbers

Q

What is a speedy carbide test?

A

A calcium carbide test determines moisture content within a damp wall. A whole is drilled into the affected wall to get a sample of the masonry to check moisture levels.
4%< is high.

Q

What are deleterious materials?

A

These materials are prohibited for use in construction due to reliability or health & safety reasons.

  • Asbestos / ACM’S
  • Hair Plaster / Lath & Plaster
  • RAAC Planks
17
Q

What are common issues with RAAC Planks?

A
  • Rusting of reinforcement steel, leading to cracking and spalling.
  • Cracking of varying severely due to moisture & temperature movement.
  • Act independently rather than a single structure.
  • Very porous & highly permeable.

*Insufficient bearing capacity.

18
Q

What types of cracking can you get?

A
  1. Expansive cracks
  2. Inadequate baring / Propping
  3. Tie failure
  4. Subsidence
  5. Heave
19
Q

What is sick building syndrome?

A

This is a condition caused by being in a building or type of enclosed space due to poor in door air quality etc.
