Hard-driving job

A

“If a person feels free to openly complain about and/or insult their domestics in public, imagine how they treat those same domestics in the confines of their own home. But on the plus side, imagine the indescribably disgusting things those domestics do to their employers’ toothbrushes. That should make you feel better.”

Excerpt From: Seidell, Streeter. “White Whine.” Adams Media, 2013. iBooks.

If you’re new to an industry, don’t cower at networking events or do the “smile-and-nod” when you’re speaking to someone with deep industry expertise. Instead, use every interaction as an opportunity to learn. People will be excited to answer your questions–while you may worry that your queries will come off as ignorant, most likely, the other person will interpret them as engaged interest!

I would define success as being able to achieve what you set out to do, while giving you a sense of purpose and fulfilment in the process.

A

I also think it is very important to work hard without being blindly ambitious. Hard work and tireless effort will lead to performance which will be recognised.

Q

I organise my waking moments in chunks, usually going by a single week at a time. For me, having work-life balance is important, and I always make it a point to prioritise and have time for family, friends and myself. I believe a person should endeavour to have balanced time for family, work, networking, and personal quiet and reflective moments.
Work will never be done. So help yourself and learn to prioritise. Find very smart subordinates and delegate your work.

A

I have been very blessed and fortunate not to have encountered many particularly challenging situations. If I did, it was more of the wrong job fit and scope of work. These were transitory periods so I made sure they didn’t last too long.

For me, talking things over with people I trust like my family and close confidantes has always been
an invaluable stress-buster. When things get really hectic, I go for jogs or walks to clarify my thoughts. I also set aside some quiet time for personal reflection.
If all else fails, a long hot bath after physically exhausting exercise goes a long way!

A

Being passionate about my work and deriving pleasure from it is one of the ways that I manage stress.

Q

Be driven by passion. You can be a success in anything you are passionate about. Lacking passion will result in mediocre performance. The moment you dread Monday and going back to work, it’s time to change jobs. Either find ways to enjoy what you do, or do what you enjoy. Once you take joy out of the formula, you are condemning yourself to living hell.

A

One step at a time, one thing at a time”. Thinking about three assignments will just paralyse the mind. Work out the actions needed for each assignment and list them all down. Sort the actions by priority. Then just do them one at a time. The mind
can only focus on one thing at a time. There is no such thing as multi-tasking. You are merely switching from one thing to the next and back again. It is counter- productive, energy-sapping and time- wasting.

Not everyone gets a chance to talk frequently with senior leaders. Hearing a strategic, higher-level perspective on the company, industry and growth in the market from the CEO, helps employees see they’re part of something larger and think beyond their day-to-day activities. It also gives the team a chance to polish how they frame questions and how they talk about their own work.

By taking a very complicated idea that may make someone raise an eyebrow, and framing it in a much simpler context, you can give people a better understanding of the point you are making. When people understand your argument, it helps reduce skepticism borne from the unknown. It is almost as if one simply takes the simplicity from the latter idea and applies it to the more complicated idea.

50
Q

I completely understand

A

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

51
Q

It’s also not a tool for deep discussion.

A

Instead, it is a way to communicate more intentionally, to make plans, and to summarize a topic.

52
Q

Every time you speak, it’s an opportunity to

A

to inform, influence, and inspire.

53
Q

Get it right and your reputation will shine from that halo effect awarded to those who are seen as confident, smart, likable, and sincere.

A

Get it wrong and you run the risk of being labeled annoying, tedious, ineffectual or irrelevant.

54
Q

Why should you allow any other thought to compromise your confidence?

A

Don’t misunderstand me.

55

“Wealth buys security, luxury, peace of mind, and, most importantly, stuff. Most of us will die without ever coming close to achieving the kind of wealth we truly crave.”

A

spirited discussion

63
Q

“A basic need of human beings is to be part of something bigger or greater than themselves, have a sense of purpose, and have the promise of a better tomorrow.”

A

“People work for businesses in the hope of achieving their own full economic potential. When highly talented and ambitious people discover that a brighter tomorrow doesn’t exist, they’ll leave at the first opportunity. Eventually the only people left will be those incapable of finding work elsewhere.”

64
Q

“you’re clueless as to what I can approve or not approve. But let’s assume for a moment you’re right and that I need to get the approval of someone else. If you go around my back, the first thing they’ll do when they finish talking with you is call me, ask me what I think. In other words, without me it’s dead, and with me it has a chance. So maybe I have the power to say yes and maybe I don’t, but I certainly have the power to say no.”
