Q

What’s an ion

A

An atom or group of atoms with a charge
All atoms loose or gain electrons to gain a full outer she’ll
Metals loose electrons to form positive ions - cations
Non metals gain electrons to form negative ions - anions

8
Q

Define diffusion

A

When particles float from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, without external force or mixing.
In liquids or gases
All particles are eventually spread out

15
Q

What’s the relative atomic mass

A

The average mass of an atom of an element relative to 1/12th the mass of an atom of carbon - 12
This number = protons+ neutrons

16
Q

What types of oxides are metals and non metals

A

Metals -> alkaline oxides

Non metals -> acidic oxides

17
Q

Why are atoms neutral

A

Because they contain the same number of positive protons and negative electrons so the charges cancel out

18
Q

What do element in each row of the periodic table have in common

A

Rows are called periods all have the same number of shells

19
Q

What do elements in each column of the periodic table have in common

A

Columns are called groups, same number of electrons in the outer shell
E.g. All group 1 elements have 1 electron in each outer shell

20
Q

What’s the atomic number

A

= the number of protons

= the number of electrons

21
Q

2 facts about isotopes

A
  • sometimes unstable , radio active

- isotopes of the same element have different physical properties but the same chemical properties

22
Q

Ammonium and hydrochloric acid diffusion experiment

A
  • cotton wool soaked in ammonium and hydrochloric acid.
  • each piece is placed in opposite ends of the tube and bungs are on.
  • this equation takes place NH3+HCl -> NH3Cl
  • as particles diffuse towards each other you see a cloud form. This is ammonium chloride (the product)
  • ammonium chloride cloud formed closer to the hydrochloric acid wool , shows us that ammonium particles are lighter as diffused faster
23
Q

3 facts on the periodic table

A

Vertical columns are called groups
Elements in the same group have the same chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in the outer shell
Horizontal rows are called periods the number of the period is the number of shells

24
Q

What is group 0 of the periodic table

A

THE NOBEL GASES
All have a full outer shell so do not loose or gain electrons
Extremely stable
Very unreactive

25
Q

Group 1 of the periodic table

A

ALKALI METALS
