C5, Chemical Changes. Flashcards
What is the reactivity of metals?
The reactivity of metals is how chemically reactive it is.
What is high reactivity (metals)?
If when a metal is added to water it reacts very vigorously.
What is low reactivity (metals)?
If when a metal is added to water it doesn’t react too much.
What is the reactivity series?
Metals in order of their reactivity.
How are metals that are less reactive than carbon extracted.
They can be extracted by reduction with carbon.
How are metals more reactive than carbon extracted.
They can be extracted through a process called electrolysis.
What is it called when a substance gains oxygen in a reaction.
Oxidation / Oxidised.
What is it called when a substance loses oxygen in a reaction.
Reduction / Reduced.
What are the first 5 atoms in the reactivity series?
Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, Calcium, Magnesium.
What is a displacement reaction?
When a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive one.
What does a metals reactivity depend on.
It depends on how readily it forms an ion by losing electrons.
What can redox reactions be defined in terms of?
Redox reactions can be defined in terms of loss or gain of electrons.
What is a acid.
An acid is a compound that dissolves in water releasing H+ ions.
What are the three main acids?
Sulfuric, nitric and hydrochloric
What is the PH scale?
A measure of acidity and alkalinity from 1-14.
