Cardiac And Respiratory System Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the arteries?

A

The arteries have thick, elastic, muscular walls that carry oxygen rich blood away from the heart to the body

Q

What is the function of the capillaries?

A

Capillaries have very thin walls and are the site of exchange of nutrients and wastes between blood and body cells. Heat from the cells are also absorbed in the capillaries

Q

What is the function of veins?

A

Veins are thin and not as elastic as arteries and they generally carry blood with low oxygen content towards the heart. Veins have one way valves which prevent blood flowing backwards away from the heart.

Q

What is haemoglobin?

A

Haemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells which oxygen attaches to. Haemoglobin carries oxygen to the bodies cells. If we have more haemoglobin we can do more work

Q

What are the functions of the circulatory system?

A

Circulates blood to all parts of the body
Transports water, oxygen and nutrients to cells
Helps maintain correct body temperature
Helps fight disease through white blood cells and antibodies in the blood
Transports wastes, including carbon dioxide away from the cells

Q

What factors affect resting heart rate?

A

Gender- males usually have lower resting heart rates then females
Eating- heart rate is raised after meals
Temperature- as air temperature increases heart rate increases
Laughing- heart rate increases

Q

What are the functions of coronary arteries?

A

Coronary arteries branch across the outer surface of the heart and feed all four chamber walls with nutrients.

Q

What are the functions of the respiratory system?

A

Brings air from the atmosphere to the lungs
Transfers oxygen into the blood
Removes carbon dioxide from the blood
Expel heat and water vapor in the air breathed out
Allows vocal chords to create speech as air is breathed out

Q

Why is it important to exercise with asthma?

A

It is important to exercise with asthma becuase:
It is part of the asthma plan

Q

What is alveoli and it’s function?

A

Alveoli is the microscopic air sacs at the end of the respiratory bronchioles, in the lungs. This is where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in the blood.
