Name some POLITCIAL CAUSES of the civil war
A
- Population in NORTH was increasing, giving the north more political power.
- 1850 Compromise handed more power back to slaveholders in the South.
- Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, states could decide for themselves whether they wanted to be a slave state or a free state, overriding the Missouri Compromise.
- 1857; Supreme Court stated that slaves had no rights and that the government couldn’t ban slavery in territories, providing power to slaveholders.
- Construction of the Republican Party in 1854 (anti-slavery)
- 1860; election of Lincoln.

- South viewed the North as ungodly and too modern.
- Arguments on whether slavery should expand or not as USA grew (1850-54).
- Douglass gained support of the public towards ending slavery.
- John Brown started an uprising of enslaved people in 1859 - he was hung but became a hero.

Why was the presidential election of Lincoln a big cause of the war?
A
When Lincoln was elected in 1860, he had lots of support from the North but practically none from the South - many states votes to secede from the USA at protest of the election of Lincoln.
After Lincoln declared the CONFEDERACY to be illegal, Davis (President of the confederacy) ordered his gunboats to open fire in April 1861, leading Lincoln to declare war.
