Cell Biology Flashcards
What is a key difference between animal and plant cells?
Plants have a cell wall, chloroplasts and vacuoles while animal cells do not.
What can stem cells do?
Stem cells are able to differentiate into different kinds of specialised cells.
What is the difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells?
The primary distinction between these two types of organisms is that eukaryotic cells have a membrane-bound nucleus and prokaryotic cells do not. The nucleus is where eukaryotes store their genetic information. In prokaryotes, DNA is bundled together in the nucleoid region, but it is not stored within a membrane-bound nucleus.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until there is equilibrium.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of ions from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration
