cell biology Flashcards
what is a cell?
a cell is the smallest unit of life.
what is a nucleus?
it contains genetic material in chromosomes
it controls how cells work and grow
what is a cytoplasm
- supports cell structures
- site of many chemical reactions
- contains water and solutes
what is a cell membrane?
- holds the cell together
- controls molecules entering and leaving the cell
what is the cell wall?
-gives the cell extra support and defines its shape
what is a chloroplasts?
- site of photosynthesis, provides food for plants
- chlorophyll pigments absorb light energy
what is a vacuole?
- contains cell sap
- used for storage of certain materials
- supports the shape of the cell
what is a mitochondria
- power house of the cells
- makes energy
- aerobic respiration
what is ribosomes
-protein productions in protein synthesis
what is vesicles?
- to safely transport substance from one part of the cell to another
is a cellulose a strong material?
- yes it is
explain vesicles:
- they are fluid filled sacks that are the tiny sacks
- vacuoles are bigger versions of the fluid filled sacks.
what is a ‘mitochondria’?
- it is a powerhouse of cells.
- creates energy
explain ‘ribosomes’:
- helps with making proteins.
which creates : ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RECTICULIM (R.E.R)
and SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RECTICULUM (S.E.R)
what does r.e.r and s.e.r mean?
- R.E.R means that it trains the system and moves around the cells. the S.E.R & R.E.R both are tunnel systems.
- the S.E.R doesn’t have ribosomes.
