Cell Biology Flashcards
What are all living things made of?
Cells
What are prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are complex and include animal and plant cells. Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler, like bacteria.
What are the different parts of a cell called?
Subcellular structures
What is the function of a nucleus and where is it found?
A nucleus contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell. It is found in both animal and plant cells.
What is the function of cytoplasm and where is it found?
Cytoplasm is a jelly like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control these chemical reactions. It is found in animal and plant cells
What is the function of cell membrane and where is it found?
Cell membrane holds the cell together and control what goes in and out. It is found in animal and plant cells.
What is the function of mitochondria and where are they found?
Mitochondria is where aerobic respiration happens which transfers energy that the cell needs to work. They are found in animal cells.
What is the function of ribosomes and where are they found?
Ribosomes are where protein synthesis happens. They are found in animal cells.
What is the function of a cell wall and where is it found?
A cell wall is made of cellulose and supports and strengthen the cell. Found in plants.
What is the function of the permanent vacuole and where is it found?
The permanent vacuole contains cell sap which strengthens the cell. Found in plants.
What are chloroplasts and where are they found?
Chloroplasts are where photosynthesis happens. They contain chlorophyll which absorbs the light the plant needs.
What subcellular structures do bacteria have in common with animal/plant cells?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall
What do bacteria cells have instead of a nucleus?
Single circular strands of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm.
What are plasmids?
Small rings of DNA.
What do microscopes do?
They let us see things that we can’t see with the naked eye
