CELL DIVISION Flashcards
what does cell division in the cell cycle involve?
a process called mitosis which produces two identical cells
what does cell division by mitosis do
produces the additional cells needed for growth and development in multi cellular organisms
stage one of the cell cycle
cell grows, increase their mass, increase the number of sub cellular structures (mitochondria, ribosomes, chloroplast), replicate their DNA to form two copies of each chromosome
stage two of the cell cycle
mitosis: one set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the dividing cell, the nucleus divides
stage three of the cell cycle
cytoplasm and cell membranes divide to form two identical daughter cells
why is cell division in the body important
around 300 million of our cells die each minute so cell division provides us with more cells
