Cell Division Flashcards
Why do cells divide?
To reproduce
To grow
To repair
What are the two types of reproduction and what are the differences between them?
Asexual and sexual reproduction
Asexual - producing offspring from only one parent. The offspring are genetically identical to the parent (eg: bacteria).
Sexual - producing offspring by the fusion of two gametes. The offspring has genetic information from both parents (gametes, sometimes called “half cells” only contain half the DNA of a normal cell)
Why can’t cells grow bigger for growth instead of dividing?
The cell can’t process certain functions like transportation and the cell has an optimum size. They have to divide in order to grow.
What are examples of cells dividing to repair?
Cells divide to heal a broke pan bone
Dead skin cells shed to be replaced by new ones.
