Cell Theory and Classification Flashcards
What does the cell theory state?
- All living things are made up of one or more cells and their products.
- The cell is the simplest unit that can carry out life processes.
- All cells come from other cells; they do not come from non-living matter.
What are examples of life processes?
Respiration (breathing)
Digestion (eating)
Circulatory System (blood flow, heart pumping)
Movement
What are the two types of cells that can be classified as?
Prokaryote and Eukaryote cells
What is a prokaryote cell and an example of it?
A prokaryote is a cell that does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles.
Eg: archaea, bacteria, E.coli
What is a eukaryote cell and an example of it?
A eukaryote is a cell that contains a nucleus and other organelles, each surrounded by a thin membrane.
Eg: protists, fungi, animals and plants
What can eukaryote cells be broken down into?
Single celled organisms and multi celled organisms
What is an example of a single celled organism?
An amoeba
What are the two types of multi celled organisms and an example of each?
Animal and plant cells
Eg: Whale and pine tree
What is an organelle?
The parts of the inside of the cell
