Cells and organelles Flashcards
Microscope
A tool used to see microscopic things using electrons or pieces of glass for magnification
Cell
The basic units of life in a living organism
Cell theory
1- all living things are composed of cells
2- cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
3- all cells are produced from other cells
Cell wall
A rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms
Cell membrane
Controls which substances pass into and out of a cell
Nucleus
Acts as a cells control center, directing all of the cells activities
Organelles
Things that carry out specific functions within a cell
Ribosomes
Small grain-shaped organelles that produce proteins
Cytoplasm
Fills the region between the cell membrane and the nucleus
Mitochondria
Converts energy stored in food to energy the cell can use to live and function
Endoplasmic reticulum
Often called the ER, is an organelle with a network of membranes that produces many substances
Golgi apparatus
Receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the ER, packages them, and distributes them to other parts of the cell or the outside of the cell
Vacuole
Stores water, food, or other materials needed by the cell. They can also store waste products until the wastes are removed
Chloroplast
Captures energy from the sunlight and changes it to a form of energy cells that can be used in making food
Lysosomes
Contains substances that break down large food particles into smaller ones.
