Cells and Organelles Flashcards
Controls what comes into and out of a cell; found in plant and animal cells. Hint: members only can come and go.
Cell membrane
The rigid outer layer of a plant cell. Hint: I’m a brick wall.
Cell wall
Gel-like fluid where the organelles are found. Hint: snail through my plasma.
Cytoplasm
produces the energy a cell needs to carry out its functions. Hint: I am a mighty Power House
Mitochondria
uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts Hint: I clean things up. Lysol
Lysosomes
stores food water wastes and other materials hint: vacuum bags I’ll store anything.
Vacuoles
Has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another. Hint: I’m a golden packer
Golgi Bodies
captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in a plant cells Hint: make me something sweet to eat
Chloroplast
receives proteins and materials from the ER packages them and distributes them. Hint: I’m a transporter
endoplasmic reticulum
assembles amino acids to create proteins Hint: I make some nice proteins.
Ribosomes
the control center of the cell contains DNA. Hint: I’m the control center
Nucleus
found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes Hint: I am the little nucleus
Nucleolus
tiny strands inside the nucleus that contain the instructions for directing the cell’s functions Hint: a “tin” of information.
chromatin
created the first compound microscope
Jensen
first to observe living cells
