Cells and tissues Flashcards
Connective tissue function and order
- Functions to provide support and integrity for other tissues and organs
- Has varied cell arrangement and order
Muscle Tissue function and order
Function: to generate mechanical force
Includes:
Skeletal (voluntary)
smooth (involuntary)
Cardiac (involuntary)
Epithelial function and order
Lines walls of open tubes
Provides secretory and absorptive surfaces
- Basal
- apical
Nervous function and order
Glia provides protection nourishment and support to nerve cells
Nerves provide long distance communication within the body
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
- Tightly packed
- Organized assembly
- Avascular but innervated
- Highly regenerative
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
1. TIGHTLY PACKED
Ensures continuous barrier w/ absorptive/secretive functions
Maintained by tight junctions
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
2. ORGANIZED ASSEMBLY
- Arranged with apical and basolateral surface
- Each surface differs in function
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
3. AVASCULAR BUT INNERVATED
Necessary for sensory functions and some secretory functions
Characteristics of epithelial tissue
4. HIGHLY REGENERATIVE
- Commonly encounter negative environmental substances
- need ability to regenerate after damage
