A

They are on C6 on the anterior part of vertebral body. Carotid artery can be compressed here to control bleeding.

Describe a Hangman’s Fracture

A

A Hangman’s fracture is when C1 and C2 pull away and C1 goes anteriorly and breaks the dens. The dens severs the spinal cord or the trachea is blocked and you suffocate.

What is a Jefferson’s Burst?

A
  • A Jefferson’s burst is a compression fracture on the arches of C1
  • The breakage moves away and stays away from the spinal cord and is NOT fatal
  • Could happen if someone landed on the top of their head in a swimming pool
