aggression
Any form of behavior that is intended to harm or injure some person, oneself, or an object
instrumental aggression
The intentional use of harmful behavior so that one can achieve some other goal
hostile aggression
The intentional use of harmful behavior in which the goal is simply to cause injury or death to the victim
indirect aggression
A form of aggressive manipulation involving attempts to harm another person without a face-to-face encounter (also known as relational aggression)
delegitimization
The process of cognitively placing an outgroup into an extremely negative social category that excludes them from acceptable norms and values, thereby eliminating inhibitions against harming them
frustration aggression hypothesis
The theory that frustration causes aggression. This isn’t a true hypothesis! 3 parts.
- frustration always elicits the drive to attack others.
- Every act of aggression can be traced to frustration.
- Engaging in aggression causes a reduction in the drive for aggression.

Assertiveness
Expressing oneself and one’s rights without violating the rights of others
