Ch. 12 Nervous System orginization Flashcards
What are the two general parts of the nervous system
CNS = Central Nervous System
PNS = peripheral Nervous System
What organs does the Central Nervous System consist of?
The brain and the spinal cord
What are the two sub division of the Peripheral Nervous System
The Sensory/afferent Division
And
The motor/efferent division
What is the Sensory/Afferent division of the PNS responsible for?
afferent/sensory neurons and fibers send nerve impulses to the Central Nervous System
What are the general senses of the afferent/sensory division of the PNS?
They are widespread in the body and some senses include touch, pain, temperature, pressure, and proprioception
What are the special senses of the the sensory/afferent division of the PNS?
hearing, vision, taste, smell
What is the motor/EFFERENT system of the PNS?
efferent neurons/fibers send impulses to effectors (muscles and glands)
What are the sub classes of the motor division?
The Somatic Nervous system (SNS)
and
The autonomic nervous system (ANS)
What is the Somatic Nervous System Responsible for?
Neurons conduct nerve impulses to skeletal muscles
What is the Autonomic Nervous System responsible for? (ANS)
HINT: AUTO
neurons conduct nerve impulses to the heart, smooth muscles, and glands.
Think lungs and heart. Thinks that are automatic/involuntary like breathing etc.
What are the two sub divisions of the Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
The sympathetic Division (SANS) which is more dominant when a person is more active. Example, your heart works faster when you’re active
Parasympathetic division (PANS): more dominant when a person is resting. IE, when a person is resting a persons heart works slower.
What are the integration/association functions of the nervous system?
HINT: THINK ACTIONS
involves interneurons in the CNS; examples are reflexes, memory, behavior, and emotions
