Power
Power: that which enables one to accomplish goals; the capacity to act or the strength and potency to accomplish something
Glass ceiling
Glass ceiling: intangible barriers to advancement, generally experienced by women or minorities
Reward power
Reward power: ability to grant rewards to others
Coercive power
Coercive power: power based on fear of punishment
Legitimate power
Legitimate power: also called authority; power gained by a title or official position within an organization
Expert power
Expert power: power gained through knowledge or skill
Referent power
Referent power: power obtained because of identification with a leader or with what that leader symbolizes
Charismatic power
Charismatic power: a personal power gained by personal magnetism or charm
Informational power
Informational power: power gained by possession of information that others must have to accomplish their goals
Authority–power gap
Authority–power gap: the gap that sometimes exists between a position of authority and subordinate response
Manager power
Manager power: legitimate power to control the actions of others
Future promising
Future promising: the promise of future rewards or actions which may not always be able to be granted
Empowerment
Empowerment: an interactive process that develops, builds, and increases power through cooperation, sharing, and working together
Queen bee syndrome
Queen bee syndrome: activities and behaviors used to keep others from power; typically a female-to-female interaction
Role model
Role model: someone worthy of imitation
