Q

Why are giant ionic lattices “giant”?

A

Because they consist of millions of oppositely charged ions

Q

Why are melting and boiling points high in ionic compounds?

A

The forces of attraction within the ionic lattice are strong and lots of energy is needed to overcome them

Q

Solubility and Ionic compounds (talk about water molecules)

A

Water molecules are polarised and have a slightly positive hydrogen end and a slightly negative oxygen end.

Ions are attracted to the charged water molecules so they will dissolve.

Q

Why are ionic compounds usually soluble in water?

A

Water molecules have a slight electrical charge and so can attract the ions away from the lattice

Q

Can ionic compounds conduct electricity when they are solid? Why/why not?

A

No, because their ions are bonded together in the lattice

Q

What happens to an ions’ ability to conduct electricity when it becomes liquid (molten)?

A

When liquid (molten), the ions can break free of the lattice and are able to move. The ions are charged particles therefore can carry an electrical current. When dissolved, the ions are free to move to carry the charge.
