Ch.1 Scientific Therory Flashcards
What is Observation Science?
Observe the phenomena and classify. Draw a conclusion from observations.
What is Experimental Science?
Manipulates one factor; sees the response. Investigator sees how one factor affects other factors.
What is Hypothesis?
Testable prediction with some basis in research and evidence.
What is Theory?
The best explanation for a phenomenon based on all available expire mental data. It is supported when there is no evidence to prove it wrong.
Independent variable
What can be controlled. The factor that is suspected of making some effect.
Dependent variable
Factor being observed for a result
What are the 7 properties of life?
- Order
- Reproduction
- Growth & development
- Energy Processing
- Response to the environment
- Regulation
- Evolutionary Adaption
Prokaryotic cell
Bacteria. Smaller and simpler
Eukaryotic cell
Animal & human. Membrane, enclosed organel including a nucleus & DNA.
Process of scientific method
1.Hypothesis- 2.Prediction- 3.Test Prediction- 4.Result
Inductive reasoning
Draw general conclusion from many observations.
Deductive reasoning
Come up with ways to test a hypothesis, a proposed explanation for a set of observations, general testing to a specific result.
Properties of a controlled experiment
It is one that is designed to compare an experimental group. Differ only in the one factor the expirimemt is designed to test.
