Social reproduction
Process by which societies have structural coninuity overtime
Socialization
Process by which we develop an awareness of social norm and values to achieve a distinct sense of self
Resocialization
Process of learning new norms values and behaviors when one joined a new group or takes on a new social role when life circumstances change dramatically
Cognition
Human thought processes involving perception reasoning and remembering
Social self
The basis of self-consciousness in a human individual
Self-consciousness
Awareness of one’s distinct social identity as a person separate from others
Generalized other
A concept in the theory of George Herbert Mead according to which the individual takes over the general values of a given group for some society during the socialization process
Sensorimotor stage
Stage of human cognitive development in which the child’s awareness of his or her environment is dominated by perception or touch
Preoperational stage
A human cognitive development in which the child has advanced sufficiently to master a basic modes of logical thought
Egocentric
Tendency of the child to interpret the world exclusively in terms of his or her own position
Concrete operational stage
Children can master logical but not obstruct notions
Formal operational stage
A stage of human cognitive development at which the growing child becomes capable of handling abstract concepts and hypothetical situations
Social roles
Socially defined expectations that a person in a given social position follows
Self identity
The process of self development through which we formulate a unique sense of ourselves and our relationship to the world around us
Life course
The various transitions in stages people experience during their lives
