Challenge of resource management Flashcards
Why is food imported to the UK?
- Not all food can be grown in this climate
- Cheaper to manufacture food elsewhere
- Seasonal crops
- More choice of food
- It is not possible to produce enough for the population
What is organic produce?
Food that is grown without the use of chemicals.
Define food miles.
The distance food is transported from its prodution to the consumer.
What are the two ways that farms in the UK are adapting to increase food security?
Agribusiness and organic produce
What is agribusiness?
Intensive farming with the aim of maximising yield. Run as a commercial business with high levels of investment and use of modern technology and chemicals.
What is organic produce?
Food is grown without chemicals, it is associated with seasonal goods produced locally. However high labor costs make it more expensive.
What is the largest use of water in the UK?
Households.
How much water is lost through leakage in the UK?
Around 1/5
What is water stress?
Where demand exceeds supply
What are the main sources of the UK’s water?
Rivers, reservoirs and groundwater aquifers.
How could water deficits in the UK be reduced?
Transporting water over large distances from areas of surplus to areas of defocit.
Define energy mix.
The range and proportion s of different energy sources a country uses.
How much of the UK’s energy is imported?
Around 36%
How is the UK’s energy mix changing?
More renewable sources are being used and non-renewables are being reduced.
What is fracking?
Extracting natural gas from shale rock
