After 1877, what begun to happen to Plains Indians?
- More were forced onto even more reservations.
What were the conditions of reservations like?
- Poor conditions
- No supplies
- Little rations
How did the railroad force Plains Indians to move onto reservations?
THINK BUFFALO
- Railroad network brought hunters that killed buffalo (that Plains Indians relied on.)
- Plains Indians couldn’t survive on their land anymore: had to move onto reservations.
How did increase in number of homesteaders force Plain’s Indians to move onto reservations?
- Less land space for Plain’s Indians so they couldn’t grow crops (had to move onto reservations.)
What was the Friends of Indians organisation?
When was it set up?
- Set up in 1883.
- Helped Indians/ but Indians lost land from the works of this organisation.
Give 2 things that “The Friends of Indians” organisation did.
1.) Indians didn’t have education –> set up schools for Indians so they could learn english.
2.) Indians didn’t have rights –> forced gov to pass act that said Indians could have rights if they gave up their land.
What was the negative effect of The Friends of Indians organisation?
- Meant that a lot of land was taken from The Plains Indians.

1.) Friends of the Indians
2.) Ghost Dance movement.
What was the Ghost Dance movement?
- Religious movement that thought dancing would get rid of white settlers and the buffalo would return.
How did the US gov respond to the Ghost Dance movement?
- Went after them.
- Killed them.
- Many of the Ghost Dancers surrendered.
