What is Criminology?
An interdisciplinary built around the study of crime and criminal behaviour including, the manifestation, causes, legal, aspects, and control.
what are Criminologists interested in ?
studying crime and criminal behaviour -using a number of resources including:
criminal statistics
the sociology of law
theories that attempt to explain criminal behaviour
crime typology
prisons and penology
victims
Each of these resources provide insight int to the complex phenomenon that is the act of crime.
What is Crime?
Our understanding of crime often determines how we react to it.
In order for an act to be criminal, to conditions must be satisfied:
There must be a law
There must be punishment in response to the violation of the law
3 ways criminal laws are different from civil law.
- Criminal law applies to all society- where as civil law applies to the parties involved
- Society as a whole as no investment in wether or not a victim goes to civil court however society is vested in the criminal persecution of an offender who commits a crime
- remedy for criminal acts is criminal persecution, remedy for civil law is to sue the other parties for damages caused.
What are the elements of crime ?
Each crime has 3 components :
- the action
- intention
- result of intention
What is the Action?
The crime is the action- or lack of action that the fed gov’t has determined harmful and thus against the law
What is The Intention?
In addition o illegal action, the accused must have intended to commit the crime.
What is the Result ?
The effect of an act will often determine how the crime will be classified. From a legal standpoint a crime is an intended act that is contrary to the law which is enforced and punishable by the government.
What is the Consensus Mode?
People agree what is right and wrong
People work together for a common good
What is the Pluralistic Prospective ?
Many views, values, and beliefs in society
There is an agreement that the law is a useful mechanism for dispute resolution
What is the Conflict Prospective?
Conflict is a normal and often an un-resolvable part of society
Those in power determine what is right and what is wrong and how law-breakers should be dealt with
What is the social problems Perspective
That crime is the underlining cause from social problems. Such as poverty, discrimination,family violence,ect
WHat is the social Responsibility Perspective?
That individuals are Responsible for their own actions. and behaviour.
What is Applied Research ?
It is often used to evaluate something.
What is Pure research ?
It is used to satisfy our dire to learn about something
