Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the study of cell structure and division?
Cytology
What is the study of naming and classification of living organisms?
Taxonomy
What is the study of structure and form of organism?
Morphology
What is the meaning of microbiology?
The study of microorganisms
What does zoology means?
The study of animals
What is the level of biological organisation?
Cells - tissue - organ - organ system - organism - population - community - ecosystem - biosphere
What does community mean?
Populations that live together in a defined area
What is the level where a group of organism of one type that lives in the same area?
Population
What does cell mean in terms of levels?
Smallest functional unit of life
What does ecosystem mean?
Community and its nonliving surroundings
Give 3 characteristics of life/living things
- organisms are composed of cells
- organisms need respiration
- organisms grow and develop
What does it mean when organisms are composed of cells?
New cells are formed only by the division of previously existing cells. Can only perform the job associated with its specific function.
What does respire mean?
To breath in to obtain oxygen and carbon dioxide
What does growth and development mean?
All living things get larger as the number of its cells increase (by cell division)
What does the adaptation to environment mean?
Traits that gives an organism an advantage to survive in a certain environment
eg: thick fur coat of polar bear to survive frigid temperatures
