Chapter 1 Flashcards
Structural Adaptation
Physical feature that helps an organism survive and reproduce
Adaptations
Characteristics that enable organisms to better survive and reproduce
Behavioural Adaptation
What an organism does to help it survive and reproduce
Physiological Adaptation
Functional feature (something happens inside the organism) that helps the organism survive and reproduce
Biosphere
The thin layer of water, air and land on or near the earths surface
Biome
Largest division of the biosphere that includes large regions containing similar biotic components
Biodiversity
The variety of all living species of plants, animals, and micro organisms on earth
Biotic
Living organisms such as plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria
Abiotic
Non-living parts of the environment such as water, soil, temperature, sunlight, and elevation
Climatograph
A graph of climate data for a specific region; includes precipitation and climate
Ecological hierarchy
Order of biotic interactions and relationships in an ecosystem
Ecosystem
A part of a biome where the abiotic components interact w/ biotic components
Elevation
The height of a land mass above sea level
Eutrophication
The process which excess nutrients in aquatic ecosystems result in increased plant production and decay
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
