Q

1: research in social psych continues to be influenced by important societal events. briefly describe two events from each of the following two time periods: 1930-1940 and 1950-1970 and how each even impacted what social psychologists studied during that time

A

1930-1940: WWII-food shortages led to government asking social psychologists trying to figure out how to convince people to change eating habits-women responded better in discussion groups rather than lectures. WWII-boost soldiers moral, remind them to brush teeth, moral depends more on soldiers interpretation of how they were doing when compared to others, persuasion to brush teeth depends on who receives the message/who delivers the message/and how the message in processed

1950s-1970: universities grew and governments supplied grant money, a wider variety of topics were able to be researched. europe recovered and rebuilt from the war-researched about group membership, influence within groups and competitive relationships between groups

pervasiveness of social influence-identifying with one team influence the way fans interpret the events of the game
valuing me and mine-fans see the players of their team in a positive light, violent plays are justified for different reasons based on which team fans root for
accessibility principle-dartmouth fans used conviction that their team was the best as a base for their judgement of the plays of the game
