Q

what is the value behind respect for persons? Who does it apply to?

A

Respect for Persons recognizes the intrinsic value of human beings and the respect and consideration
that they are due. It encompasses the treatment of persons involved in research directly as participants
and those who are participants because their data or human biological materials (which, for the
purposes of this Policy, include materials related to human reproduction) are used in research.

Q

what is a common cause of vulnerability?

A

Vulnerability is often caused by limited decision-making capacity, or limited access to social goods, such as rights, opportunities and power. Individuals or groups whose circumstances may make them vulnerable in the context of research have historically included children,
the elderly, students, women, prisoners, those with mental health issues and those with diminished
capacity for self-determination.
