A

2 main sections : North and South

13 original states were split between the North and South

North includes the ‘Free states’
( NY, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan etc)

South included the ‘slave states’

Free states and slave states should be equal in order to have fair votes.

Define Federal

A

Relates to the central government of the union of states,

When USA was expanding westwards and gained new land, the land had to be organized into federal territories before becoming states.

Missouri compromise

1820

A

Missouri wanted to join USA as a state therefore there was going to be an imbalance of north states and free states

Therefore the Congress (senates & House of Representatives) agreed to let in another state to make them equal they let in Maine

Economical differences between the north and the south

A

The north had factories
The south produced cotton

The north bought cotton from the south at the same time Britain had factories and also bought cotton from the south.

The north did not approve of this therefore tariffs were introduced so that Britain can stop buying from America

A

Tariffs are taxes or duties paid on certain imported and exported goods.

It means that particular imported products or materials are more expensive to consumers. Governments encourage consumers to buy from different sources

Texas and Mexico

A

Texas was part of Mexico until it declared independence in 1836
Slavery was illegal in Mexicco
In 1845 United States and Texas came to an offer to annex Texas
Mexico did not approve of this therefore the Mexican American war began
US invaded Mexico and took the capital of Mexico

A

Annexing a territory means incorporating it into an already existing political entity such as a state country or city

A

Wilmots belief amendment simply stated that slavery was not permitted in any land gained from Mexico Whistler it was purchased or won in war

The compromise of 1850 and it’s breakdown

A

> California joined the USA as a free state

> The slave trade was abolished in Washington DC

> a new fugitive slave act was passed and helped police get the fugitive slave slaves that were escaping.
~slave owners can claim that the person slave caused separates.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act

A

There were Lands that have not yet been organized into territories. Therefore Stephen Douglas’s plan was to let Kansas decide whether it will be a free state or slave state.
‘ popular sovereignty ‘

This act repealed the Missouri Compromise since the states had the option of choosing whether to be a slave state or free state.

In order to gain votes, people from both the North and the South moved to Kansas to get more votes for their side.

The election resulted with the south winning (pro-slavery)

‘Bleeding Kansas’

A

Those opposed/against slavery held their own election and wrote their own constitution that banned slavery.

This caused a local ‘civil war’ between the two governments where over 200 people died.

A

A group of people that were opposed to slavery.

What kept there groups together was opposition to government policies towards Kansas and a desire to prevent any expansion of slavery.

The Dred Scott case

A

Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in a slave state but then lived in a free state.

Heel went to court to gain citizenship but Dred Scott had no right to be a US citizen.

The Supreme Court decided that it is allowed to have slaves in the free states however the slaves will not become free they will remain slaves.

A

The Supreme Court has ultimate authority over all legal decisions in the USA. It is the highest court in the country and consists of nine judges, All nominated by the president and approved by the senate.

The 1860 presidential election.

A

Lincoln-Douglas and Abraham Lincoln had a big debate.

Abraham Lincoln believes that the new states to come must not have slavery while Lincoln Douglas believes that the states should decide for itself

There were 4 people running for president but Abraham Lincoln won the votes to become president

The raid on Harpers Ferry 1859

A

John Brown a leader of 22 men was involved in in fighting in the Kansas-Nebraska conflict.

He hoped the seizure of weapons would encourage the African Americans to support him to destroy the North’s army however no one supported him.
He was sentenced to death

The secession of the south 1860-1861

A

Lincoln election in 1860 worried the south therefore the south agreed that the only solution is to secede from the United States and rule themselves.

Not all the slave states seceded which is significant

Therefore Lincoln’s main goal was to keep America together and prevent the south from seceding.

The new union became known as the Confederate States of America and they adopted their own flag for separate identity

Fort Sumter

A

Lincoln faced a problem regarding the military fort knownw as Fort Sumter it’s location was at the south where some of the slave states seceded.

People in Fort Sumter were starved
The president of the Confederate states of America (Davis) ordered that Fort Sumter is either surrendered taken by force.

Anderson refused to surrender therefore the Confederate forces fired at Fort Sumter.
The following day Anderson surrendered, and Lincoln called in armies and announced a naval blockage and the civil war began.
