Chapter 10 Flashcards

Q

Suggest one reason why the Law of Conservation might support the idea of recycling rock in the universe.

A

Because if matter can’t be destroyed or created, then something would have to replace the magma that spews up from the earth; Think of plate tectonics, the subvergent plates are sliding under another one and melting to form more magma, why can’t it be the same with rocks?

Q

Describe the three general types of course-grained igneous rocks.

A
  1. Pegmatite: Exceptionally large crystal formation, rare minerals, almost entirely crystal.
  2. Porphyry: Larger crystals embedded in a fine-grained groundmass.
  3. Phanerite: Contains large enough crytals to be seen with the naked eye.
