Q

What did the Hershey-Chase experiment do and find?

A

The experiment used bacteriophages to show that DNA is the genetic material of T2, a virus that infects E.coli. In the experiment, the phases were labeled with radioactive sulfur to detect proteins or radioactive phosphorus to detect DNA. Bacteria were infected with either type of phage to determine which substance was injected into cells and which remained outside the infected cell.

Q

Define prions.

A

Prions are misfolded proteins that can cause diseases in humans and change normal proteins and make them abnormally fold.

Q

Define the semi conservative model of DNA.

A

The semi-conservative model of DNA states that when DNA copies, the two DNA strands separate and each new DNA helix has one old strand with one new strand.

17
Q

Explain the process of DNA replication.

A

It begins at a particular site called the origin of replication. Proteins that initiate DNA replication attach to the DNA at the origin of replication and separate the 2 strands of the double helix. Replication then proceeds in both directions, creating replication bubbles.
