Sex
Being biologically and sexually either male or female
Gender
The attributes and disposition that culture attribute to each other
Biological determinism
Behavioral differences are the result of inherited physical characteristics
Gender identity
Awareness of being male or female based on culture (gender is cultural and sex is biological)
Gender socialization
How boys and girls learn how to act
Functionalist
Functionalist argue “any behavior not benefiting society become important”
Conflict theory
It’s to men’s advance to prevent women from gaining politically, economically and socially
Symbolic interactionist
How boys and girls learn how to act- they learn from parents, teachers and peers.
Sexism
A set of beliefs attitudes, norms and values used to justify gender inequality
Occupational sex segregation
Women are mostly concentrated in lower status occupations
Pink collar crimes
Secretaries, clerks, (those who support higher up occupations) when women do obtain in higher status jobs they receive lower prestige and pay.
Ageism
Set of beliefs attitudes, norms and values used to justify age based prejudice and discrimination
Age stratification
Unequal distribution of scarce resources based upon age
Acute illness
Short term problem usually cured (cold, flue)
Chronic illness
Long term condition which involves major organ systems and requires extended care (cancer, arthritis)
