Chapter 11-14 Flashcards
Afferent nerves
A nerve that carries sensory nerve impulses towards the central nervous system.
Arbor vitae
treelike pattern of cerebellar white matter
Axon
impulse-generating and -conducting region
Cerebellum
the part of the brain at the back of the skull in vertebrates
Efferent nerve fibers
a neuron conducting impulses outwards from the brain or spinal cord.
Gyrus
a ridge or fold between two clefts on the cerebral surface in the brain.
Hypothalamus
a region of the forebrain below the thalamus that coordinates the autonomic nervous system
Memory
The faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information.
Neurotransmitter
A chemical substance that is released at the end of a nerve fiber by the arrival of a nerve impulse and, by diffusing across the synapse.
Oligodendrocytes
Branched cells
Processes wrap CNS nerve fibers, forming insulating myelin sheaths thicker nerve fibers
Parasympathetic division
Decreases heart and respiratory rates, and allows for digestion and discarding of wastes
Reflex
Rapid, automatic responses to stimuli
Particular stimulus always causes same response
Schwann cells
Surround all peripheral nerve fibers and form myelin sheaths in thicker nerve fibers
Sleep apnea
A serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep
Sulcus
A groove or furrow, especially one on the surface of the brain
