Chapter 12 Flashcards
Plant has 2 systems
What are they?
Shoot system
Root system
What is the shoot system responsible for
- the transport of resources
- Reproduction
- photosynthesis
What is the root system responsible for?
-absorbing water and nutrients from the soil
Non -vascular plants
Non -vascular plants
- Do not contain xylem and phloem cells
- Restricted to moist environment
- No taller than 20cm
- Root like, stem like structures.
Vascular tissue
Vascular tissue
In vascular plants, there are specialised cells and tissues to distribute organic compounds such as water, gases and minerals around the plant.
- Vascular tissue is involved in the transport of substances.
- Vascular tissue is composed of 2 different type of tissues which are xylem and phloem
Xylem
Xylem – is responsible for the transport of water, nutrients and minerals from roots to leaves.
o These cells are dead; however, they still help transport water.
o Cells are elongated and tubular
o Tracheids and vessel elements
o Tubes formed by dead xylem cells
Xylem only goes one way
Phloem
2 types of cells, what are they?
Phloem – transports sucrose around plants
o Moves sucrose up, down, left, right
o Alive – always
Phloem has 2 types of cells
- Sieve tube cells
- companion cells
Transporting water
Transporting Water
4 process
- Root pressures (via osmosis)
- Adhesion – adherence (stick) to sides of vessel (xylem)
- Cohesion – water molecules adhere to each other
- Transpiration (evaporation from leaves) causes transpirational pull
