Ageism
Prejudice/discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age.
Cultural relativity
Principle that meaning is created by one’s culture and truth is culture specific; the same experience may carry different meanings to people of different cultures
Culture shock
Failure to comprehend the culture in which one is living.
Ex:language, food,
Ethnocentrism
Use of one’s own culture to judge the beliefs, behaviors, attitudes, and values of people of another culture
Ex: “my culture is better than…”
Health disparity
A “particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social or economic disadvantage”
Ex: minority neighborhoods are more likely to not have good healthcare because of economic issues, food insecurity…
Health equity
Attainment of the highest leevl of health for all peopl.
Implicit bias
refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.
Key informants
Persons who know and will discuss certain aspects of their culture with someone outside that culture
Racism
Oppression and exploitation of people of a different skin color or ethnic origin
Stereotypes
Preconceived beliefs about a person or people
Subculture
Beliefs held by a portion (e.g., occupational or age group) of the larger population
Transcultural nursing
Synthesis of anthropology and nursing that focuses on the cultural dimension of care and recognizes that a person’s cultural background influences and determines both health and illness
