Q

What major global shifts facilitated independence movements of the late twentieth century?

A

One reason is that due to being forced into wars through the principle of ‘Total War,’ colonies had to produce war materials in factories and provide food to soldiers, but due to attrition, soldiers died very quickly, thus making the colonized countries start to view the European states as weakened. This caused them to start revolting against European governments.

Q

What enabled Europe, the Soviet Union, and Japan to recover from the devastation of the war?

A

Europe was able to recover from the devastation of the war by rebuilding their industrial economies and reviving their democratic political system partially through the marshall Plan which allowed their economy to rapidly glow and include political and military security for Europe by America.

Soviet Union was able to recover through Soviet exploration of their convicted laborers which provided a major source of cheap labor as well as seizing industrial complexes, agricultural goods, and other useful resources from Germany, Poland, and other places.

Japan was able to recover through their rapid industrialization and democratic constitution imposed by American occupation.

Q

How was China’s shift to communist rule different from that of the Soviet Union?

A

China’s shift to communist rule was different as while the Soviet Union’s economy had far more industrialization and they saw the communist revolution in the USSR as being more of a worker’s revolution, China (being a far more agrarian country) saw it as a peasant’s revolution against landlords who they pitted as the enemy.
