Chapter 15 non word parts Flashcards
A bulging, weak area in the wall of an artery that supplies blood to the brain.
Cerebral Aneurysm
Progressive muscle atrophy caused by degeneration and scarring of neurons along the lateral columns of the spinal cord that control muscles (also called Lou Gehrig disease)
ALS - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or reduced , often by a blood clot. After a short time, blood flows again and the symptoms go away. This is a sudden deficient supply of blood.
Transient ischemic attack (TIA)
The blood flow to part of the brain stays blocked, and the brain has permanent damage. Hemorrhagic _____ is a result of bleeding (also called CVA –cerebrovascular accident)
Stroke
Paralysis of muscles on one side of the face caused by inflammation or compression of the facial nerve – cranial nerve VII. Usually temporary.
Bell Palsy
Viral disease that affects the peripheral nerves and causes blisters on the skin that follow the course of the affected nerve (also called herpes zoster) Sciatica – inflammation of sciatic nerve, causing pain that travels from thigh through the leg to foot and toes.
Shingles
Inflammation of sciatic nerve, causing pain that travels from thigh through the leg to foot and toes.
Sciatica
Condition characterized by recurrent seizures; a general term given to a group of neurologic disorders, all characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
Epilepsy
Chronic degenerative disease characterized by sclerotic patches along the brain and spinal cord; signs and symptoms fluctuate over the course of the disease; more common symptoms include fatigue, balance and coordination impairments, numbness, and vision problems.
Multiple sclerosis
Recording (scan of) blood vessels of the cerebrum (after contrast agent injected).
Cerebral Angiography
Insertion of needle into subarachnoid space for many reasons including removal of cerebrospinal fluid (also called spinal tap).
Lumbar Puncture (LP)
Nuclear medicine procedure creating computerized images of chemical changes.
PET Scan- Positron emission tomography
Record of electrical activity of the brain.
EEG – electroencephalogram
Intrusive, unwanted thoughts that result in tendency to perform repetitive acts or rituals.
Obsessive –compulsive disorder (OCD)
Spectrum of mental disorders, onset infancy or childhood, preoccupation with subjective mental activity, inability to interact socially and impaired communication (also referred to as _____ spectrum disorders).
Autism
