- specific and unique in shape due to the specific folding and bonding in the tertiary strcuture of the protein
- due to the AS being so specific, the enzymes can only attach to the substrates that are complimentary in shape
- AS forms a small depression within the large enzyme molecule

its held within the AS by bonds that temporairly form betwee specific aa and the groups on the enzyme molecule
