Chapter 2: Immunity Flashcards
1
Q
What is non- specific immune response?
A
defence mechanism not specific to individual, destroy pathogens by phagocytosis
2
Q
How does skin act as a natural barrier?
A
Provides tough physical barrier that most pathogens cant penetrate. Consists of dead cells filled with keratin.
3
Q
Enzyme Lysozyme
A
4
Q
Describe inflammatory response
A
- pathogen enters body
- capillaries become leaky
- infected area becomes swollen
- phagocytes can squeeze through leaky capillary walls
- area red due to increased blood flow
5
Q
Describe Phagocytosis
A
- phagocyte attracted by chemicals pathogen produces
- cell surface membrane invaginates engulfing it
- forms vesicle called phagosome
- lysosomes move toward vesicle
- hydrolytic enzymes hydrolyse the pathogen
- soluble digested products absorbed into cytplasm of phagocyte
